How can I use a 2012 Macbook without any available password

How can I use an 2012 macbook pro my son has given me. He does not remember his password & so I went to Apple Support to find out how to change the password or wipe the computer & start again from scratch.

They asked me to start up in recovery mode several times but the macbook would not connect to the internet so Apple Support told me it would be impossible to ever use this 2012 macbook and all I could do with it would be throw it away..

This would seem slightly unbelievable that I have a perfectly functioning machine which software is preventing from being used. I just don't get that.

Surely I should be able to use this machine ? Or am I completely wrong ?

If only they could make a car with those same protections where only the owner can drive it and has the power to remove the protections to allow someone else to use it. It really is not unbelievable that the car could be a perfectly functioning machine with software that could not be bypassed to prevent unauthorized access. We can only hope that day will come.

That would be your son that needs to gain access to his account if he does not remember the password.
