FileVault and automatic login settings conflict

I've just looked at my FileVault settings and it's grayed out with the message: "FileVault can't be turned on as automatic login is enabled". So I check my Users & Groups settings and they say: 'Automatically log in as' is off because "Automatic login can't be turned on because FileVault is enabled". Surely they can't both be correct? Does anyone have any idea what I can/should do?

Thanks. I can't say I understand a lot of what's being said, but I'll try to make sense of it.

There is indeed a conflict which seems to require that you disable FileVault using the command line until Apple fixes the problem:

sudo fdesetup disable

It always was confusing for people when they wanted to enable Automatic Login and also had FileVault enabled. It seems Apple tried to add some information to the Settings to clarify the problem, but in that attempt they locked both settings down if Automatic login was enabled, and then the Tahoe install enabled FileVault.

Once everything is all settled

The automatic login process could be a great idea—you won’t have to remember the computer password.

Over time, and possibly soon.

When Apple releases another point update to Tahoe.

You’ll need to remember what this password is.

You’ll have to manually type in the computer password.

That is, before the update can be allowed / permitted to install.

This is a Security Requirement to ensure you are the owner of this computer.

Just letting you know.

Ah. I understand. So I just have to wait for 26.2.

In the context of having to manually type in the computer password before the 26.x will download and then install

Much like when an iOS Device is alerted there is an update to be installed

In that specific situation

The Owner of that iOS device is Required to Manually type in the PIN code

The same principle does apply to Apple Computers
