As far as I know, the info. available is mostly in this Apple Support article (link below) and the Shopping help website. Eg: Article below says you can cancel a gift up to two days before it is to be sent, and you can resend a gift, if recipient can't find the mail with the link. I didn't see anything at all about gift returns though.

Sorry to say ... seems indeed that too much time really has elapsed since the gift was sent / received.
