2019 Macbook Angle Sensor Problem

My 16in 2019 macbook pro has developed the unfortunate problem of keeping the display on, despite the macbook being closed. As you close the lid, there's a period where the screen turns off, but then right as the lid is all the way closed, the screen turns back on again and won't sleep until the battery is dead and my backpack is practically aflame.

I've seen cases where replacement angle sensors need to be calibrated by Apple to work properly, but everything about my computer is OEM, I've never even had the lid off. I'm pretty clearly outside warranty, but is there anything I can do without paying loads of money for a new sensor replacement?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.7

You will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with an estimate to replace the Lid Angle Sensor. The sensor itself is inexpensive & easy to replace, but it needs to be done by Apple so that it can be properly calibrated & paired with the Logic Board. I have no idea what Apple or an AASP may charge for it.

Edit: If you are comfortable performing repairs, then you can see whether your laptop is part of the Apple Self Repair Program where you can attempt to repair it yourself:

While I have seen these Lid Angle Sensors fail quite a lot especially with the M-series Macs, I have not seen them fail as often on the Intel Macs. Accidental liquid damage is one of the most common ways these Lid Angle Sensors fail (especially on the Intel Macs) and you do not want to repair a liquid damaged laptop yourself no matter your confidence & skill level.
