iMac Mail import messages after hard drive replacement

After having my hard drive replaced in my iMac desktop, I get pop-up messages saying the program wants to import 2,651,526 messages to my Mail account. Can anyone explain this and offer a solution?

iMac 27″, macOS 15.7

Mail is trying to rebuild its entire database after your hard drive replacement, but it's stuck in a corrupted import loop. You can stop the pop-ups by resetting the Mail folder or deleting the index files, which forces macOS to start fresh and download your messages normally.

Nothing will be lost as long as your email accounts are IMAP/iCloud/Exchange.
