How does Fall Detection work on Apple Watch GPS only?

I am thinking of purchasing a series 7 Apple Watch gps only. My main reason for this is fall detection. But would that work, if I didn’t have my phone in my hand when I fell? How near does the phone need to be? Can it only really be relied upon if you have cellular?
