Files cannot be opened on unlocked FileVault drive

I removed a FileVault protected drive from an iMac and I cannot open files directly from the drive or when copied. An example is a Word DOCX and message 'Word found unreadable content in FILENAME.docx. Do you want to recover the contents of this document?'. The same issue with a PDF and message 'It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognise.'

I have the correct password for the drive and have unlocked and can browse all folders. It is SSD drive fomatted with AFPS. Any help appreciated.
