ACMI iPhone – Unlocked for International Work Travel

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to buy a new iPhone 17 Pro using Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI). I will be traveling outside the US for 4 months for a work assignment immediately.

I’d like to know:

  • Do I need to select or activate it with a US carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Boost), or can I just buy it and use it internationally?
  • Will the iPhone remain unlocked and work with my local SIM abroad?
  • Any experiences with using ACMI iPhones during extended work trips outside the US?

Thanks in advance for your help!

To purchase an iPhone on ACMI, it must be activated on one of the four supported U.S. carriers - AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Boost - at the time of purchase.

However, this does not mean that the phone is locked. After the initial activation, you can switch carriers, including internationally, at any time.

Also be aware the iPhone models sold in the U.S. have no physical SIM slot, they are eSIM only. So it would be good to double check that the carrier you intend to use it on supports eSIM.

All iPhone models are world phones, so you can use them almost anywhere. Whether you are a GSM or CDMA network customer, you can roam internationally on GSM networks in over 200 countries or regions around the world. Availability of LTE data varies in some countries or regions and depends on carrier support for certain LTE radio frequencies. Contact your wireless carrier for more information regarding international roaming policies and rates.

Do I need to actually get a SIM card from that carrier to activate the phone, or is it just a carrier selection for the system?
Will the phone remain unlocked• and work with my local SIM abroad immediately after purchase, or i have to wait 35 days?

iPhones sold in the US do NOT have a physical SIM slot. They are eSIM only. You can not use a physical SIM in a US market iPhone.
