Preview opens "open file" dialog after screen capture

When I use shift-cmd-5 or any other screen capture, Preview automatically launches an "open file" dialog box, which makes no sense (I will need to save the captured image, not open a different file). It's annoying. Is there any way to disable this?

MacBookPro 2021, M1 Pro, Tahoe 26.1.

That's a little odd. Try changing the default destination folder: open Screen Capture (shift + command + 5), click Options and choose a folder. I find it convenient to choose the Desktop but you can choose any other folder.

(Note: I'm still on macOS Sequoia, if it makes any difference.)
