How do I fix unread message count on Apple Watch after update?

Since the last update, my Apple Watch continues to show an unread messages number. Currently it shows 22. All of which I have read on my iphone. This never used to be a problem until lately. I have restarted both the watch and iphone. It shows that it mirrors my phone. I have unpaired and repaired my watch. Nothing helps. What can I do? I understand that I can ask Siri to read my unread messages but then it starts reading loudly all 22 of them. I have cleared each message multiple times, but they continue to accumulate as i receive more messages. Help!!
