Screenshot function issue on iMac

Recently, when I use "screenshot" function, the highlighted portion of my screen remains lighted after I press "capture." and I cannot stop it without turning off my computer and restarting it. How can I stop this from occuring?

It looks like you may have selected the "Record" function instead of "Capture".

When you press Command-Shift-5, the three options on the left are for capturing a screenshot image, and the next three are for recording video. When one of those is activated, a stop button appears in the menu bar. Click it to stop the recording.

Press Command-Shift-5, select one of the three leftmost options. Or use Command-Shift-3 to take a shot of the whole screen, or Command-Shift-4 to make a selection.
