Lost my phone and Find my is not working

Hello, I lost my iPhone recently and I’m very frustrated because Apple states that an iPhone is still findable even when powered off. However, in my case, the device keeps showing as offline and I’m getting no updated location at all.

I want to understand clearly:

  1. Why is my device showing offline if this feature is supposed to work when the phone is off?
  2. Under what exact conditions does “iPhone is still findable when powered off” actually work?
  3. What could prevent my phone from being located through Find My Network?
  4. What steps can I take now to maximize my chances of finding it?

I really need accurate clarification because the feature did not work as advertised in my situation.

Thank you

Yes, it's true an phone which is powered off "may" be trackable, IF and only IF it is near another iPhone, which can read the tiny signal it is broadcasting. If your phone has not come within range of another iPhone, it really can't be tracked if powered off or not connected to a network.

If someone has now found your lost iPhone and they aren't someone who would want to help reunite you and your iPhone, they would make sure it is either powered off or put it in a Faraday Bag, to ensure it can't be tracked. The sad reality is most lost iPhone's are never found.

Have you followed all the steps in this link on what to do if your iPhone is lost --> How to find your lost iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

In order to be findable when powered off, the find my network must have been enabled on the device, it must come within range of another iOS device with the find my network enabled, and there must be enough power remaining in the battery to make a BLE connection with the device.

There is nothing you can to do increase your chances of finding it after the fact.

Do NOT fall for any phishing messages claiming to be from Apple or law enforcement claiming the device has been located and directing you to log in to see the location!

That's a possibility, not a guarantee. It depends on the phone still having a battery charge and on another Apple device coming within VERY close range, close enough to hear an intermittent Bluetooth signal from your phone. Basically, we're talking about the same sort of mechanism that supports AirTags.

If your phone is not close to a place where people with other Apple devices are, you won't get a location. If your phone was stolen, the thieves may have placed it in a Faraday bag or wrapped it in foil to block radio signals, and then you also won't get a location.

Here is the accurate information that you are seeking. First of all, you do not know if the phone has been powered off, but this is a possibility. There are multiple reasons why a phone might appear as "Offline"

  • The battery has run down
  • The phone was powered off.....see more info below
  • The phone does not have an Internet connection
  • A thief has wrapped aluminum foil around the phone or placed it in a Faraday bag.....so the phone cannot send or receive a signal. (Any iPhone thief is well aware of this).

In theory, the phone can be located if it has been powered off.....But....this depends on whether there are other iPhones or Apple devices in very close proximity to the phone to pick up the intermittent Bluetooth signal that the phone sends out when it has been powered off.

We can discuss "close proximity" more if you wish, but think of a device in the same room or within 25-30 feet of the missing phone.

Of course, if the battery has run down.....something that you may not have thought about.....the phone cannot send out a signal at all.

Frankly, as long as the phone is showing "Offline", there is nothing that you can do other than keep checking every few hours to see if the status of the phone has changed and look for the phone physically in the area where it was lost.

Were you at a restaurant or shop when the phone was lost? Have you checked to see if someone has turned the phone in to the management?

Yes, you can blame Apple if you want, but it's not their fault that you cannot locate the phone.
