A Trojan and a virus are 2 different things.

A Trojan is an application or file that claims to be something else, you download it and it is malware.

A virus doesn’t require any action by the user. You go to a website, view an email, etc. and get infected.

To access your email, your device doesn’t need to be infected or targeted. The provider may have fallen victim to an attack.

Why do you think your email is compromised?

Hi Jonathan

Thank you for replying. I appreciate your response! I received an extortion email from hacker claiming, they got access to my email account, social media accounts and downloaded all my personal data and images etc. if I don’t send the $1650 in crypto currency, they will email and post ‘compromising’ images to family and friends to jeopardize my reputation. I don’t have anything to fear.

I believe it’s a scam but not sure.

As soon as you said "trojan virus", the first thing I thought of was the now (at least) three year old scam email/message that makes threats unless you pay some random amount of a ransom fee to a crypto account. stedman1 confirmed it.

This scam keeps changing. The bulk of the message stays the same, but it's been:

  1. The FBI is making threats unless you pay up (which they wouldn't do in the first place since that would be committing a crime in response to a crime).
  2. You were caught on camera doing very naughty personal things and they'll release the video unless you pay up (this one was a favorite for well over a year).

There have been a few others, and yours is new. At least, I haven't heard that one before.

Sounds like a common scam where the criminals lie their heads off to frighten victims into paying - when the criminals have nothing at all.

They may have sent this same scam message to thousands or millions of people, in hopes that a few would bite.

Still, it would not hurt to change the passwords of any accounts mentioned in the scam message. Sometimes accounts get compromised on the server side.
