Global setting to hide file extensions in macOS

how to hide file extension?

Hello guys. Im fairly new to Mac OS but Ive done my research and watched plenty YouTube videos and I can't hide file extensions. Its pretty much across every file type. If I go to one file and go to get info I can hide file extension but if I go to finder - settings - advanced - and untick "show file extension it doesn't work. all the files still show extension.

If I go to "get info" and hide file extension it will go away. Then I leave window open and go to finder advanced settings and tick show file extension on and off the file extension does go on and off. It just doesn't apply the settings to the rest of the files. I also tried to mark all the files in the folder and then tick and untick the settings it doesn't help.

Any other thing that I could do ??

Can you be more specific about what file extensions do and do not appear to work?

The reason I ask is that I think 'Show all filename extensions' in the Finder settings is misnamed.

It should really be 'Show common filename extensions'.

In other words, at least on my machine, toggling this does show (or hide) common filename extensions associated with specific applications.... .app, .numbers, .pages.

What it does not hide are extensions from generic file types (e.g. .txt, .html, .png) that could be associated with multiple applications.

It also seems to differentiate between files downloaded from the internet. e.g. downloaded.pdf -> does not hide, but a Pages document exported as PDF does, which indicates there's some internal metadata that it's feeding off, that is currently opaque to me.

I don't see a single, one-click option to do what you want.

Not sure why you would hide file extensions... seems vital and critical information.

Finder>Settings>Advanced....(?)
