No local Documents folder or Desktop folder

I have no local Documents folder or Desktop folder but they do exist in my iCloud account. How do I restore these folders on my MacBook Pro? I still want to keep them synced with iCloud. I am running the latest version of macOS Tahoe on an M4 MacBook Pro.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 26.1

System Settings>[name]>iCloud>Drive gets this:


When you turn on Desktop & Downloads Folders, they stop appearing in your User's folder, and the show up in iCloud Drive, instead. If you're not using Optimize ( you can see above that I don't,) then the files continue to be kept locally, but they are copied to iCluod.com so they can be shared and accessed by other devices on your account.

Sorry, you ended up responding to a user that does nothing more than provide AI responses and never follows up with any user to provide the actual human assistance expected on this support site. Not sure why Apple lets the user continue to post, but here we are.


Follow what was posted by Richard.Taylor and they will be able to follow up with any needed help and a very respectable user who volunteers their time to assist others.

As with much of AI, some of "his" posts have useful information while others have flat out wrong stuff. Generally it's cold and incomplete. I've been following "him" around for some time-- not happy that my role is checking AI posts for accuracy.

Not only is inaccuracy a concern leaving others to clean up, but what is most disheartening for me is when the OP asks a follow up question as seen here and we no there will be not be a follow up. That human connection is the most important part of a Support Site such as this and leaves an OP hanging unless we can somehow find these posts to provide the needed information.


Thank you for being here where you can actually provide screenshots and links for more information that is never found in those other types of posts.
