Older iMacs on macOS 10.9.5 can usually update only up to macOS 10.13 High Sierra, depending on the model year. To know your exact upgrade limit, check “About This Mac” and share the iMac’s year. Updating is possible through Apple’s official installer once the correct version is known.
Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and then on the download link for a newer OS. Your computer can be upgraded at least as far as El Capitan, but you may need a newer one to get the file.
Catalina and above won't run 32-bit software and split the functions of iTunes up; if you choose one of them, use Go64 as well.

If that is an iMac and it is running OS X 10.9.5, the very best case is that it is from mid 2014 and can run macOS 11 (Big Sur). Big Sur itself has not been one of the “most recent three” for a couple of years.
And that is the best case. That iMac might not be capable of running anything later than El Capitan or High Sierra, both of which are very obsolete.
