Usability bugs following update to Tahoe

I have a MacBook Air 13", M3, 24GB. Following the recent update to Tahoe (26.1), I'm encountering basic usablity bugs that persist even after a reboot.

  • I have the dock set to auto-hide. Often it will not un-hide. I presume it is getting stuck under other windows and thus is not visible, but it should be always on top. Note: I'm not using an external monitor.
  • Menus often don't dismiss after choosing an option and stay on screen, e.g. after selecting a wifi network the menu stays on top, even when clicking anywhere else on the screen.
  • Mouse pointer gets stuck as the wrong icon (e.g. adjust size instead of arrow).
  • Sometimes I can't get past the lock/login screen. Touch ID does not respond and there is no place to type the password. To get past this I have to close the laptop lid and reopen.

I didn't have any of these problems before. My Mac Studio is also having the same issues. This is the first time I've genuinely been disappinted by a macOS update.

The dock hide/unhide was a frequently-reported issue, reportedly fixed in macOS 26.2 so the first step is to update your Mac.

For the other issues, see if the problems are present when you boot in safe mode, which disables 3rd party extensions and performs some system cleanup.
