How to delete a background item from Login Items on Mac?

Hi - I found an item under Login items/Allow in the background named "Joseph Siegrist". There is no additional info icon. My only option is to allow it to run or not. Currently it is off. I'd like to delete it. How do I do that?

Thanks

Post the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. This will likely identify the piece of software that is installed in your Launch folders. That would be the first thing I would do and will also show the location to delete it, if it is installed in one of the three launch folders.

Go to the Finder and choose the Go menu, then Go To Folder. Enter this in the location there and don't forget the "~" character at the start. There is another LaunchAgents folder you can access without using that "~" at the start, but that is not the one you want.

~/Library/LaunchAgents

You should then see the file to delete named com.lastpass.LastPassHelper.plist. That should remove the background item that you are seeing.

You can also use someone else's EtreCheck report.

When I search for:

Joseph Siegrist etrecheck

I get this link: Etrecheck Poor performance; report attach… - Apple Community

which says:

User Launch Agents:

[running] com.akamai.single-user-client.plist (Unknown - installed 2017-01-24) [Lookup]

[running] com.amazon.music.plist (Unknown - installed 2015-04-24) [Lookup]

[loaded] com.google.keystone.agent.plist (Google, Inc. - installed 2017-03-28) [Lookup]

[running] com.lastpass.LastPassHelper.plist (Joseph Siegrist - installed 2015-07-17) [Lookup]

[loaded] com.nds.pcshow.uninstall.plist (Shell script - installed 2017-03-22)

So it looks like this is the founder of LastPass, but a very old version from when he was releasing software under his own name.

Hi Mac Jim - Thanks to all for the responses. The report (attached) gave me the location of the Joseph Siegrist file... but I cannot find it. Specifically there is no "LastPass/LastPassHelper.app" in any Application Support folder I'm able to access. Suggestions?

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.lastpass.LastPassHelper.plist

        Executable: ~/Library/Application Support/LastPass/LastPassHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/LastPassHelper

Details: Exact match found in the legitimate list - probably OK

BTW - I upgraded to this MBP a few years ago from a 2011 MBP. I never ran LastPass on this Mac but did run it on the old one. Fortunately the "Joseph" issue is not serious. However I am following up. Thanks for all the patient advice.

Great!

You may have that other folder in your Application Support folder and can use the same technique with the "~" at the start if you want to delete it. It is not causing any problems in your Application Support folder, but is taking up space. You should be able to find a folder called "LastPass" where it can be deleted by going here or using copy/paste to Finder > Go > Go to Folder.

~/Library/Application Support
