MacBook Air: Mojave to Monterey update concerns

hi, so my father gave me his old MacBook Air that is well over 10 years old and still works completely fine. although he gave me it, it still has his info and stuff on another user. now what seems to be the problem for me is that I don't really enjoy how the current thing looks and how I can't download specific apps bc my father refuses to let me update it. for context this is a macOS Majave ??...uh MacBook Air 11 inch early 2015 ver 10.14.6..and there's an update which says it could update to ver ?? macOS Monterey.. 12.7.4 uh 12 GB (my current storage is 47/121) , my fathers concerns falls to whether the device is gonna lag or not and what about his files and what will all happen to it...help..pls

As an experiment, I installed Big Sur on my 4/120 GB 2014 MacBook Air, and it was so slow, it was unusable by any stretch of the imagination. It barely has the ability to run Catalina and Monterey would be even worse than Big Sur.

Just to add, you don't mention whether the MBA has 4GB or 8GB RAM, and if by (41/121) you are saying your MBA has a 128GB drive, It is the bare minimum to run Monterey and some apps that will run on it.
