Recovering emails from an inactive @mac.com account

Before 2007, I primarily used _________@mac.com for emailing. I eventually lost access to that email address and account. I'm wondering if there's any way to recover or access those old emails, particularly because they contain correspondence from my grandmother that I'd love to read again.

I understand it's been many years, but I wanted to check if:

  1. There's any way to regain access to that old @mac.com account
  2. Apple retains any data from accounts that have been inactive for this long
  3. There are any recovery options I haven't considered

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. These emails have significant sentimental value to me.

If it became inactive due to wrong password entered incorrectly too many times, then you would need to use Account Recovery.

If a request was made by you to deactivate the account, then you will see it showing Inactive when attempting to use it. In that case you would have received an alphanumeric code that is used to activate it again. Without that code, there will be no way to access the account.

Also an account can be deleted. For just a short period of time it would it be possible to cancel the deletion request.

Specific information about the evolution of the @Mac.com account is available here.

  • If you had a working @mac.com email address as of July 9, 2008, kept your MobileMe account active, and moved to iCloud before August 1, 2012, you can use @icloud.com, @me.com, and @mac.com email addresses with your iCloud account.
  • In each case, you can sign in with your @icloud.com email address, email addresses associated with your Apple Account, or your phone number.
