After being messed around on chat for a week I complained by phone and was offered Air Pods as compensation (free gift), I have waited a week now and no Air Pods and no email conformation etc

That seems to be the phone number for Apple support in the UK. Perhaps you should call them back and ask them what is causing the delay.

FWIW, I’ve never heard of Official Apple Support doing this; but that doesn’t mean that it didn’t occur in your case.
