iPhone 17 and CarPlay disconnection issue: How to Fix?

Since upgrading to an iPhone 17 it refuses to remain connected to CarPlay and even after upgrading to iOS 26.2 I’m lucky to get through two songs before it disconnects. I am having to resort to having the CarPlay settings loaded on the phone to constantly turn it off an on again which immediately fixes the problem (for a few minutes). From looking through the message boards this is a common problem and I have tried every suggestion there is. Both the CarPlay unit and the phone are fully up to date. I have disconnected, reconnected, rebooted, turned off widgets, changed the phone name, allowed CarPlay through screen lock and still the problem remains. Given that this has clearly been an issue for months I struggle to see why apple have not fixed this. A technology that has been around for over a decade, and that worked flawlessly with a phone 4 generations older should not be having this sort of issue.

If CarPlay doesn't detect your iPhone, make sure CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions are turned on, tap Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is enabled. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, and then tap Forget This Car.

If you're still having trouble with your car's audio system using CarPlay or Bluetooth, try the Aux cable. To get it fixed, there are two options:

  1. Take your car to a reputable car dealer or car audio specialist. They have experienced technicians who can diagnose the problem with the Aux cable. This could be a loose connection, a faulty cable itself, or an issue with the system's Aux port. They'll be able to repair the issue or recommend a replacement cable if needed.
  2. Consult your car's infotainment system manuals. These manuals often include troubleshooting sections that might address common Aux cable problems. You might find instructions for resetting the system, cleaning the Aux port, or confirming the cable's compatibility.

Before taking your car to a dealer, it's always a good idea to check the manuals first. This can sometimes save you time and money if it's a simple fix you can handle yourself. However, if the manuals don't offer a solution, or you're uncomfortable tinkering with the system, then a car audio specialist is the way to go.

Wireless CarPlay (as well as wireless Android Auto) are becoming more 'challenging' as the environment fills up with more and more wireless signals from nearby businesses, homes, and even other cars on the road that come into proximity and interfere with the wireless frequencies used to connect the phone to the head unit.

If you have significant problems, a wired connection could be a better choice if that is an option for you. Not all head units support both connection types. I know that some are wireless only.
