How big is your internal SSD boot drive?

One thing you can do to free up space if you use Time Machine regularly is to open Disk Utility and check for local snapshots on your boot drive. If there's a lot of them delete all but the last one:

Another thing you can do is the following:

1 - get an external SSD formatted APFS

2 - copy your Pictures and Music folder to it.

3 - make sure the libraries on the external drive work as expected.

4 - once you've confirmed the EHD libraries are working OK you can delete the contents of the Pictures and Music folders. Do not delete the folders themselves.

5 - if you still need more room (I try to keep 80-100 GB of free space to facilitate optimal system and application performance) you can do the same with the Movies folder.
