How to efficiently export standard audio files (M4A/MP3) from Voice Memos on Desktop?
I am looking for a solution or better workflow for exporting recordings from the macOS Voice Memos app (running macOS 15).
Currently, I am running into two specific roadblocks that make the process very time-consuming:
- The "Share" Menu: This menu seems restricted to specific apps (Mail, Notes, etc.) and does not offer a "Save to Finder" or "Export" option to save directly to a local folder.
- Drag and Drop Issues: When I try to bypass the menu by dragging the file to the Desktop, the system often creates a .qta (QuickTime Audio) file instead of a standard audio file. This .qta file is not compatible with other software I use, requiring me to perform a secondary conversion to get it back to .m4a or .mp3.
My Question:
Is there a hidden "Export" setting, a shortcut, or a specific workflow that allows me to save a recording directly to a folder as a standard audio file (M4A or MP3) without generating these .qta container files? The current steps involving drag-and-drop followed by file conversion feel excessive for a simple export.
Has anyone found a script or method to streamline this in 2025?
