Phone brightness settings goes down when the phone is in sleep mode

when my phone is in sleep mode when i get a message the phone wakes up to display and message and goes back to sleep mode but bring down my brightness to where i have to turn back up when I pick up the phone to look at it I’ve made sure the auto brightness is off and other things that I’ve looked on YouTube that have not help I am starting to think this is a software glitch
