Numbered menu items (Voice Control) suddenly appearing?

A few weeks ago Roy Bradshaw asked a question about the annoying numbers that appeared alongside items in menus. I had no idea what he was talking about as I had not seen any but it turned out to be a feature of Voice Control.

A couple of days ago (after using Tahoe for several months) I suddenly started getting these numbers.

I have switched off VC but I am still puzzled as to why they suddenly started appearing as I have not (consciously) done anything or updated Tahoe recently . . . I am still on 26.0.1.

Maybe I'm just going bananas!

I will update eventually but I am simply puzzled as to why I have not been seeing the numbers for the past year and then they suddenly appeared when VC was presumably on the whole time.

As I said earlier, it's been a weird morning and I have posted something else that can't be put down to imagination or forgetfulness.

I replied to your other post. FWIW, it could have simply been a corrupt .plist file due to bugs in the early versions of Tahoe. I doubt you'll get an actual explanation.
