How to keep old IMessage chats while changing Apple ID

I am currently logged out of IMessage on my MacBook, which I used with my old Apple ID. When opening the application I am asked to log in with an Apple ID. In the background of that pop-up-window I can still see that my old chat histories exist. Since those are really important for me, I would like to keep them. If I log in with my new Apple ID solely on the Messages App – while Messages is disabled for ICloud on this Mac – will my old chats still be available next to my new ones? How can I achieve to keep my old locally stored Apple IDs chats?

vielen Dank, dass Du Deine Frage hier teilst. Wenn ich Dich richtig verstanden habe, möchtest Du Deine alten iMessage-Chats auf Deinem Mac behalten, während Du Dich mit einer neuen Apple-ID anmeldest, und fragst, ob die alten Chats sichtbar bleiben, wenn iCloud für Nachrichten deaktiviert ist. Bitte korrigiere mich, falls ich etwas falsch verstanden habe.

Solange iCloud für Nachrichten nicht aktiviert ist, bleiben Deine alten Chats lokal auf Deinem Mac gespeichert. Sie werden also nicht gelöscht oder überschrieben, wenn Du Dich mit einer neuen Apple-ID anmeldest. Falls Du iCloud später aktivierst, könnten die alten Nachrichten jedoch nicht mehr angezeigt werden, weil sie nicht mit der neuen Apple-ID verknüpft sind.

Um ganz sicherzugehen, könntest Du vorab ein Backup der alten Chats machen. Die Dateien („chat.db“ mit Anhängen) findest Du im Finder unter ~/Library/Messages. Kopiere diesen Ordner an einen sicheren Ort, z. B. auf eine externe Festplatte. Danach kannst Du die neue Apple-ID in der Nachrichten-App anmelden, ohne dass Deine alten Chats verloren gehen.

Es ist wichtig zu wissen, dass sich die Details je nach macOS-Version leicht unterscheiden können.

As long as iCloud for Messages is disabled, your old chats will stay stored locally on your Mac. They won’t be deleted or overwritten when you sign in with your new Apple ID. However, if you later enable iCloud for Messages, those old conversations might no longer appear because they aren’t linked to the new Apple ID.

To be safe, you could make a backup of your old chats first. You’ll find the files (the chat.db file and attachments) in the Finder under ~/Library/Messages. Copy that folder to a secure location, such as an external drive. After that, you can sign in to Messages with your new Apple ID without losing your old conversations.

If I understood correctly, if iCloud for Messages is disabled on my Mac, I could simply sign in with my new Apple ID – After signing in, my old chats would remain visible as usual in the left sidebar. However, messages from my new Apple ID (which I use on my iPhone and iPad) wouldn’t load, since iCloud for Messages is turned off. Still, I would be able to start new chats with my usual contacts using my new Apple ID.

So technically, everything should work — I could keep my old chats and start using my new Apple ID for texting. Did I understand this correctly? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

One question remains:

What would be the reasons to enable iCloud for Messages later on? Does it have to do with syncing messages across multiple devices (like between iPhone, iPad, and Mac)? Currently it’s enabled on my iPhone and disabled on my iPad. I don’t know why I even turned in on or off. Both use my new Apple ID.

Sorry, dass ich auf Englisch geschrieben habe. Ich benutze das Forum zum ersten Mal und war etwas verwirrt.

Wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe, könnte ich – sofern iCloud für Messages auf meinem Mac deaktiviert ist – mich einfach mit meiner neuen Apple-ID anmelden. Nach der Anmeldung würden meine alten Chats wie gewohnt in der linken Seitenleiste sichtbar und durchlesbar bleiben. Allerdings würden die Imessages und SMS meiner neuen Apple-ID (die ich auf meinem iPhone und iPad verwende) nicht geladen werden, da ja iCloud für Messages deaktiviert ist. Trotzdem könnte ich neue Chats mit meinen üblichen Kontakten über meine neue Apple-ID starten.

Technisch gesehen sollte also alles funktionieren – ich könnte meine alten Chats behalten und gleichzeitig meine neue Apple-ID zum Schreiben verwenden. Habe ich das richtig verstanden? Bitte korrigiert mich, falls ich falsch liege.

Eine Frage bleibt noch:

Welche Gründe gäbe es, iCloud für Nachrichten später zu aktivieren? Hängt das mit der Synchronisierung von Nachrichten über mehrere Geräte hinweg zusammen (z. B. zwischen iPhone, iPad und Mac)? Ich möchte einfach nur Imessages uns SMS von all meinen Geräten senden und empfangen können. Speicherplatzmangel wäre mir zur Aktivierung von ICloud für Messages nicht relevant.
