how to do I transfer music from an older ipod touch to a new one

Use iTunes.


Although that sounds straightforward, it assumes that the music on the old iPod is in your iTunes Library. It should be.


For example, if by "old iPod" you mean something like a Classic or a nano, then iTunes would have been the only method used to get music onto that iPod. This means that the music should still be in your iTunes Library. So simply connect the new iPod to iTunes and copy that music from iTunes to the new iPod.
