Keyboard spacebar will not give a space

I have rebooted and factory reset my computer to try to get my spacebar functioning normally. If continuously press it I get these random letters and characters, cvxx§coz§. It just will not give me a space.

iMac 21.5", macOS 10.14

Try an SMC reset:

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

If that doesn't work try connecting a usb keyboard and see if that works as expected. If it does then the problem is the keyboard hardware and you'll need to replace it.
