Apple remote will not work with my 2017 edition MacBook Air

If you're attempting to set up and use the iTunes Remote app to control your iTunes library, you'll also need a supported iOS device, then set up the iTunes Remote app as follows:

If you're wanting to use the Apple TV Remote app or physical Apple TV remote, it would not use your Mac:

• Set up the Apple TV Remote on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
• If your Apple TV remote isn’t working - Apple Support

If this isn't what you're wanting to do, could you please provide more detail? What type of remote are you wanting to use with your Mac? How and where are you trying to play content?

What Apple Remote?

If you're talking about the old handheld remote control, or one from an TV, that won't work with a Mac. Your Mac does not have an infrared receiver.
