photos library disappeared

When opening my MacBook Photos App all my photo library is missing!

Where did you store the Photos Library? Have you checked the Pictures folder? By default, Photos is creating the library in the Pictures folder.

And what did you do, right before your photos cannot be any longer found? If you just upgraded to a new system version, Photos may no longer be able to find your Photos Library. try the following:

  • Open the folder Applications and look for the Photos.app there. Start Photos directly from Applications and not from the Dock or a saved icon on your Desktop.
  • Select the Photos.app, hold down the options key ⌥, while double clicking Photos in the Applications folder. Wait for the Library Chooser dialog to appear, before releasing the ⌥ key.

Select the largest library you are seeing in the Library chooser dialog. Does this bring your photos back?


If you have been using iCloud Photos you may need to enable it again as described here: Get help with missing photos - Apple Support
