is this iPad's battery permanently dead?

I got an iPad from a yard sale for free that apparently haven't been turned on in years. it still won't turn on after several hours of charging. when plugged in, it displays the no charge symbol, Apple logo, turns off and repeats. iTunes won't recognize it unless in DFU mode and recovery fails at waiting for iPad(unknown error).

It sounds like at least a totally discharged battery which would need to be replaced, and you can’t be sure about any other problems until the device will at least start. Contact Support to get an official assessment and quote for service.
