Which version of MacOS X do you have installed?

  1. In Photos 1.0 on Yosemite the Recently Deleted album may be hidden. To make it visible choose File > Show Recently Deleted.
  2. In the newer versions of Photos, the Recently Deleted Album will appear automatically in the sidebar, but it may not be shown, if it is empty.

The Recently Deleted album can be empty and invisible for several reasons, even if you did not empty it.:

  • Photos will remove deleted photos automatically after thirty days.
  • If you are running out of cloud storage, deleted photos will be deleted automatically and not saved in Recently Deleted.
  • Or you may not have deleted a photo at all, but just removed it from an album. Photos you remove from an album are not moved to Recently Deleted, but just removed from the album. If you want to delete photos from your library while browsing an album, use the key combination ⌘⌫, not just ⌫.
