MacBook Pro screen shuts off when level, turns back on when elevated???

It's been happening for a month or so now. If I have the laptop on a flat surface the screen will shut off frequently. If I raise the laptop off the surface (and angle it towards me) the screen turns back on. Sometimes it shuts back on when placed back on the table and I have to prop it up at an angle with a book or similar item. So frustrating. I can't comprehend why this is happening. I've tried pushing on different surfaces (especially the bottom) with my hand to replicate the issue as well as try the screen at various different angles. The only factor seems to be if the laptop is on a level surface or not. Has this happened to anyone else?
