does a usb 3.1 (male ) to thunderbolt (male) cable exist,Imac late 2012
I want to set up a simple raid system using the two thunderbolt (0 ? ) on my iMac ( Late 2012 )
the best( & cheapest ) housings I can find are all usb 3.1 , but I am having a job finding a cable .
or does a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt adapter exist.
As I stated before, Thunderbolt 1 and 2 do not support USB in any form
directly. You must use some type of active USB to Thunderbolt dock
or an adapter as I have posted or a Thunderbolt drive. It does not
convert the USB signals to Thunderbolt signals.
To clear it up, USB-C is a connector specification and not a transport
signal protocol. USB-C can be used for Thunderbolt3 only or USB3.
The USB consortium created a lot of confusion by introducing a
"universal" connector interface and calling it USB-C.
The only way you can use the adapter you linked to, is if the
drive was a Thunderbolt3 drive.
Why are you avoiding the cheap solution of a USB3 hub? It
will be nearly as fast as the Thunderbolt interface you have.

I was thinking about a Thunderbolt 3 (usb-c ) to thunderbolt 2 , from apple,https://www.apple.com/fr/shop/product/MMEL2ZM/A/adaptateur-thunderbolt-3-usb-c-vers-thunderbolt-2 I have the same problem with multibay enclosures , I cannot find with thunderbolt & thunderbolt 3 enclosures are way over budget for the moment , except if I get them reconditioned from the states & then I have to pay import tax which again puts the price up.
The only possible solution would be a device like this:
and then attach a USB3 hub to it.
Unlike Thunderbolt3 on the new iMacs, the older Thunderbolt ports are
not directly USB3 compatible.
The 2012 Mini already has USB3 ports, the cheaper approach would
be to simply get a USB3 hub or for a bit more get a USB3 multibay enclosure
with drives or stick your own drives in it. OWC is a good starting point
for these types of enclosures.
Just to add, the product manufacturers only add to the confusion
by leaving out a lot of details or simply mislabelling products confusing people
in thinking that USB-C/USB3/Thunderbolt3 are all one in the same
which is not the case all the time.
