Currently I have a 2009 Imac that is connected to a secondary monitor through the mini display port, to HDMI.
I just purchased a new IMAC because the 2009 has had its day.
However, I would like to use my 2009 Imac as a second monitor that connects to the new Imac.
Can someone tell me what kind of connector/adapter I would need to make this happen?

If the 2009 is a 27" and is still working perfectly then you can use Target Display Mode. If it is not a 27" and/or it is not working perfectly it cannot be used, please review https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592 and that will tell you which Macs will work and what connections to use. BTW, if your 2009 does not meet the requirement, NO there are no work arounds.
Please remember, Macs are computers not displays for other computers.

Yes you can use any external display as a second display for your new iMac. You will just need the right connections. Without knowing what connections the external display has we cannot recommend the correct adapters.
Thank you doesn't look it will work as my old one is a 21.5 inch I am wonder if I could use a regular computer monitor as a second monitor and what I would need to do that

Your new Mac has USB-C so you will need a USB-C to HDMI adapter. Apple sells one, that is what I'd recommend rather than cheap third party ones that tend to fail.
