My Photo Stream no longer appears in Photos since updating to 10.14.6

"My Photo Stream" no longer appears in Photos since updating to 10.14.6, and recent photos taken with my iPhone no longer appear in Photos on my MacBook. iCloud settings in both the Mac and the iPhone have My Photo Stream turned on. I do not use iCloud for my photoslibrary, and that has never presented a problem with My Photo Stream with prior versions of macOS.

How is My Photo Stream turned on in 10.14.6?

The answer through trial and error: The macOS 10.14.6 upgrade requires the Mac user to re-designate the existing photos library as the "System Photo Library." This is accomplished through Photos>Preferences>General, then (if not already selected by default) select Photos Library Main in the Pictures folder, and finally click on the button "Use as System Photo Library." My Photo Stream will reappear in the Photos Library.
