ios 13 ipad imessage not able to use phone number

Updated iPad and iPhone to iOS 13.1.2. Had been using iOS 12.x.x. iMessaging on iPad is no longer using phone number and has defaulted to using AppleID for messages. Prior to this update I was able to choose whether to use phone number or AppleID. Process must have changed in IOS13. How can I add my phone number back to the iPad?

Hello,


Please verify that Messages is enabled on both your iPhone and iPad in Settings > Tap your account > iCloud.


Please verify that iMessage is enabled on your iPhone and iPad in Settings > Messages.


Please verify that Text Message forwarding is enabled on your iPhone in Settings > Messages.
