It seems the directions overview mode has been replaced with "share location" on apple maps directions. Turn by turn is now the default and it can't be changed. I have vision problems and the turn by turn mode view really messes with me. I need the flat static mode that overview used to provide. Is there a way to get it back that I am missing?

Go into Settings under Maps and under Driving & Navigation turn off the Share ETA option and overview will come back.
