I used to swipe to the left and be able to search but it’s not there anymore

To be clear, swipe down starting from anywhere on the screen away from the edge. Top middle = Notifications, middle middle = Spotlight search.

With iOS 10, 11, 12 and 13 the feature was changed. You now tap and pull down from the middle of the display to pull up the search bar.
