Mail opens automatically Catalina

I just upgraded to Catalina but I found that Mail APP often opens automatically. I tried to close mail or quit it but neither method works. It's very annoying that the screen is suddenly split or a new window popped up. Anyone else has the same issue as me? Can someone tell me how to fix it? Many thanks.

  • Scan your Mac for Malware:

Use MalwareBytes for Mac --- This is software that searches for malware/adware. So, scan with it and then remove what is found. Once removed, uninstall MalwareBytes for Mac. Then restart the Mac.

Downloads:

  1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac
  2. Malwarebytes Uninstaller

  • Reset your SMC and NVRAM:

Sometimes Changes are made and Preferences are set, and the macOS becomes manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM:

As a Last Resort, Reinstall the Mac OS

If you reinstall the macOS, nothing would be deleted. All intended, original files and Apps that came on your macOS would be reinstalled. It’s all about keeping your system files intact.

Time Machine backup:

Important: Create a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong.

Links For Reference:

  1. reinstall the macOS
  2. restore Safari from a backup

Hi Wshan2600,

Thanks for posting about your issue with Mail in macOS Catalina. I'm happy to help out with this.

How often does this happen? Does it come up when you first start up your Mac, while in use, or both?

Have you noticed if it comes up when you're using a certain app or taking a particular action?

As a start, I recommend testing this in both safe mode and a temporary administrator account. Knowing whether you can replicate the issue in both circumstances would determine if the issue is system-wide or user-specific, and if there might be certain software causes. Check out these links for the steps:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Feel free to reply back with those results and the community might have additional steps to offer accordingly. Have a good one.

Change a Few Preferences in Mail:

  • Check for New Mail Manually:

Seems Mail is automatically checking your mail on a random basis. Mail is consistently popup up with window showing you what is there. That means you need to set it to do so Manually

  1. Go To: Finder menu bar
  2. Go to: Mail menu
  3. Click: Preferences...
  4. Click: Check for new messages"
  5. Set: this to “Manually

—-

  • Force Quit the Mail Application:

If Mail is open, then this will continuously occur.

  1. Go To: Finder menu bar
  2. Select: Apple menu
  3. Click: Force Quit...
  4. Select: Mail
  5. Click: the Force quit” button

—-

  • If Preferred, Remove Mail as a Login Item:
  1. Go To: System Preferences
  2. Select: Users & Groups
  3. Select: your User Name
  4. Click: Login Items tab
  5. Select: Mail
  6. Click: the “—“ button

Hi TheLittles,

we didn't mean these wanted, small popups in the corner of the screen, which shows, that a new mail was received. The whole screen becomes divided in lefthandside and righthandside. I tested it, decreasing the update timer and sending E-Mails to myself. That's not the reason. And of course we don't want to surrender Mail.

Best regards,

Philipp
