iMovie won't update on new iMac

We've just bought a new iMac which has an old version of iMovie on it but won't allow us to update it. Any ideas why or how to resolve this please? Thanks

iMac, macOS 10.12

To update iMovie to 10.1.13 drag your present iMovie app from the Applications folder to the Trash, but don’t empty the trash. Then go to the online app store, sign in with your Apple I.D, and go to the purchases list in your account. You should be able to upload iMovie 10.1.13 from there.

Excellent point Rich, yes that would have been a bit helpful. Sorry

It's a new 2019 iMac on Catalina update 10 . 15 . 1

The iMovie on this is 10 . 1 . 10

The current / old iMac is 2009 with High Sierra update 10. 13 . 6

The iMovie version is 10. 1. 12

We want to transfer our iMovie onto the new iMac but it is saying that its is not compatible. And Catalina (the new OS update) doesn't support the latest iMovie version.

We thought this may mean we may have to 'downgrade' to Mojave or High Sierra so that it can accept our current iMovie?

But we tried to go back to Mojave (which we think IS compatible with our latest iMovie) but it seems to say this is too old to be applied to our Mac version.

All help most gratefully received.

Cheers

Stewart
