Wifi or Hardwired ?

When my Macbook Pro is connected to wifi and a hardwired Ethernet cable does it know to use the hard wired connection for connecting to the internet?

unless you manually change the service order or if a service fails then Ethernet is prioritized over wi-fi. If that network cant find a path to your destination it will try the wi-fi connection if available.

you can set this under

>System Preferences>Network / set service order (under the gear icon)
