why is my Mac slow?

I am new to Mac and it seems the system is very slow; it takes more than 30sec to open an application. Is that normal? If not, what can I do?

This is one of the symptoms SMC may need to be reset........Your Mac performs unusually slowly, even though its CPU isn't under an abnormally heavy load.

Applications should open quick within a couple of seconds. ⌘
