My iMac is from 2011, runs OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. What's the most recent OS that I can update to? It says my Mac is too old to upgrade to Catalina, but I need something newer in order to upgrade an unrelated software app.

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac.
Check that third party apps you use have updates available for the new OS.
Check that your printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software available for the new OS.

Thanks, I clicked the link and it took me to the App Store, but when I tried to install High Sierra I got a pop-up that said "This copy of the Install Mac OS High Sierra application is damaged..." and cannot be used. Further attempts led me to "To use the Mac App store, you need Mac OS10.6.6 or greater". Mine runs 10.10.5. Not sure what to do now.
Ok so I have just connected to the App Store and I can download High Sierra, so the link works.
Are you trying to download it whilst using WiFi, try a cabled connection to your router instead.
Do not use the Mac while it is downloading, and if you have other devices that share your
internet conviction, don't use them either.
When you connect to the High Sierra page in the App Store, what options do you see,
Get, Downloaded or Installed?
I tried it again and it still won't work. That link opens a page to download High Sierra, but then when I click "Get macOS High Sierra" under #4, it opens the App store. Then when the App store window opens, I click "open" at the top left of the screen, and the same message pops up, "This copy of the Install Mac OS High Sierra application is damaged and cannot be used". It said that in order to use the App store, I must be using 10.6.6 or later; mine is 10.10.5, so that should be fine right? I don't understand why it won't work for me. Is there another application that I can use to open the link besides the App store?
If you see Open in the High Sierra App Store page then the App Store is detecting a copy or partial copy of the High Sierra
installer on your Mac. Open your Applications folder and look for Install macOS High Sierra.app, if you find it and it is less
than 5GBs in size delete it and empty the Trash. Also have a look in your /Library/Updates folder look for a folder that has a name consisting of numbers, 041 etc, if you see that delete it and empty the Trash.
Restart your Mac, go to the High Sierra page and try downloading again.
In my Library>Updates, there is a folder called Firmware, and in that folder are two folders labelled with numbers. One is 031-12297, the other 031-20634. When I open each, there's one file called "031-12297.English.extraInfo". Are those folders what you were referring to?
What are the dates on these folders/ files, do they concur with times at which you have attempted to download High Sierra. Part of the upgrade process to High Sierra includes a Firmware update.
As an experiment you could copy the Firmware folder and its files to a USB stick, and then delete the folder and its files from the /Library/Updates location. Remove the USB stick, access the App Store High Sierra page and see if the option changes to Get. And if it does offer you the chance to Get, try again.
Have you done a Spotlight or Finder search for any High Sierra related files on your Mac.
It says they were created in 2015. I bought the computer in 2012 I think, then at some point updated the OS to Yosemite, maybe that was in 2015, not sure. I'll try to download them to memory..though the last time I tried to use a memory stick, the drive would not recognize it, will try again...
Ah ha! I did a search in my Library and discovered a copy of install High Sierra. Trashed & emptied. Now I just need to wait for the external hard drive that I ordered to arrive so I can back everything up and try again.
P.S. I looked in Applications but didn't see Install macOS High Sierra.app or anything similar
