Excel Files saved in Numbers?

I can't help suspecting that my Mac Excel files don't appear in Finder because Apple is favoring Numbers. My only spreadsheets are stored as Numbers files. Any comment or do you have a suggestion on how to get these files to open in Excel?

Numbers can open .xlsx files. But Excel can't open .numbers files.

If you need to get your Numbers data (and most formulas) into Excel then in your menu try File > Export to > Excel ... and then open the new file from Excel.

Often you can also copy-paste from Numbers to Excel.
