I updated to macOS Catalina dnd now when I want to use my Microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, etc., I get a message saying that "Microsoft Word" needs to be updated. Do I need to buy a new license or what is happening? I can't use any of the programs and that is a problem!

It depends on what version you currently have.

If it is Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, that is not compatible with Catalina. You can either buy a current version of Office For Mac 2019 one-time purchase or subscribe to Office 365. See: https://products.office.com/en-us/buy/compare-microsoft-office-products-for-mac?ms.officeurl=mac-compare-redir
Microsoft Office 2016 (updated), Office 2019, and Office 365 all work with Catalina. Older 32 bit versions of Office do not work with Catalina.
