disabling video playback but not audio in final cut pro

I am syncing clips together with audio (not the identical audio, simply different sections of music with the same rhythm, performed in the same take by the same musician following a guide click track,to keep rhythm lined up), but content keeps cutting out as I playback, because of the amount of content in the clips which are compound clips. I could render and play back smoothly, but that means I have to render each time I do an adjustment and want to hear the adjustment. Is there any way to turn off video monitoring, and still hear audio, without detaching the audio from the video? This will conserve processing exclusively for audio, which will have no trouble playing back in real time without rendering. Hope that makes sense to others....Thanks!

try the timeline index Rollers section and see if you can switch off video roles there.
