How to play a DVD on Mojave?

I have an Apple DVD player connected to an iMac 21.5-inch/late 2013 running Mojave 10.14.6.

When I insert a disc into the player, I can hear it spinning and trying to read, but nothing happens. DVD Player does not open, iTunes does not open, nothing until the disc is ejected. In System Preferences, the box is checked to open DVD Player when a disc is inserted. What else to do?

Is there updated software for Apple DVD Player, or is there a third party app to try?

Thank you for the suggestion of trying another disc, because that explained the problem. It was a very fundamental (head-slap) error on my part: I was trying to play a Blu-ray disc in a DVD player. I simply didn't notice the label on the box or disc.

Sometimes it is just that simple.

Problem solved.
