Can't update to Catalina on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro, retina

When I try to update the 15.1 installer says I need 15. I'm running High Sierra. Tried to download Mojave as an intermittent step but the Apple Mojave site says the it won't download because the file is damaged and can't be installed.
